The 2011 lineup is listed below.
Apache Relay

The Apache Relay cemented their bond while traveling in the middle of the night from Nashville to Alabama and back. They spontaneously formed the band after just one gig at Belmont University and now, just over two years later, The Apache Relay is releasing their second album. American Nomad, a modern and young roots-rock collection follows their debut 1988, produced by Doug Williams best known for his authentically raw approach with the Avett Brothers. The record cracked the door to reveal the band’s capabilities, and Paste Magazine named it an “Auspicious Debut” and highlighted the band as “Best of What’s Next.”

Balsam Range
To encapsulate, Tim Surrett delivers entertaining MC work as well as seasoned lead and harmony singing. Tim also plays bass most of the time, and he will occasionally move his talents to the resonator guitar. Buddy Melton is one of the most gifted tenor voices in bluegrass and Americana today. His range and tones largely give BALSAM RANGE its identifying sound, and his stellar fiddle playing supports the band’s programs equally. Caleb Smith has been called “one of the top young guns of guitar.” Caleb also delivers ballads with a perfectly toned, believable tenderness. Darren Nicholson is one of the most gifted mandolins players and harmony singers ever to come from the Southern Mountains. Darren’s studied, energetic performances rival those of the classic old guard performers, and his enthusiasm for American heritage music styles has no bounds. Marc Pruett plays traditional three finger banjo in intuitive and powerful ways that blend and compliment the influences in the band of jazz, bluegrass, country and gospel.

Beta Radio
As the singer for the Wilmington-based band Beta Radio, it’s easy to view Mabry as the polar opposite of the duo’s other half, Brent Holloman. Holloman is stoic, bearded and wears a tattooed ring in lieu of a wedding band while Mabry is energetic and loquacious, perfectly juxtaposed to Holloman’s fatherly reserve. After 10 years of on-again off-again writing and playing, Beta Radio has settled into their folk sound with this debut album "Seven Sisters." Although “Seven Sisters” is largely folk and acoustic driven, it’s also peppered with gospel, string playing, and introspective lyrics. The songs sound like they’ve been written by musicians who’ve been making albums for years.

Doc Aquatic

Doc Aquatic is an Indie Rock quartet based in Asheville, NC. Their unique sound comes from a tasteful blend of vintage rock ‘n’ roll and indie rock sensibilities. The band is comprised of J.C. Hayes (lead vocals, guitar) and Adam Grogen (guitar, keys), whose angular and melodic guitar work combine to create a familiar, but unconventional sound. Backing the two are Charles Gately (bass, vocals) and Zack Hayes (drums). Starting in late 2008, they steadily began honing their craft and developing a passionate live show leaving the crowd hooked at a number of noteworthy venues across the Southeast. The Hates brothers played music together as kids before moving to Boone to attend Appalachian State University for school. It was there that Doc Aquatic took form after the brothers hooked up with Adam and Charles. The band quickly won the Appalachian State Battle of the Bands for 2009 and began to build a reputation in the mountains of North Carolina as one of the area’s most notable emerging indie rock acts.

Floating Action

There’s no such thing as a “typical” Floating Action song. Folk, soul, southern-rock, gospel, surf, and bedroom lo-fi somehow coexist and cohere in the same record—even the same song. There is, however, a distinct Floating Action sound. Kauffman’s warm recordings and lushly anachronistic sound is uniquely his. The attentiveness given to production quality is palpable; you can all but hear the vinyl crackle in gently graceful tunes like “Please Reveal” or “Rincon.” Like Dr. Dog keyboardist Zach Miller said in a recent interview, “His songs are timeless, effortless, and instantly memorable.”

Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit
Keyboard player Derry deBorja, guitarist Browan Lollar, bassist Jimbo Hart and drummer Chad Gamble play with either the ferocity or subtlety that the songs call for. Having played over four hundred shows together as a band Jason and the guys have an innate sense of one another; they are gelling into a truly great band. The original state motto was written by Alexander Beaufort Meek, a former Alabama attorney general, in his 1842 essay outlining the history of the state. The last lines of that history say: “We have shown the condition and character of our population; the Red Sea of trials and suffering through which they had to pass; the fragile bark that floated in triumph through the perils of the tide….From such rude and troublous beginnings, the present population of Alabama, acquired the right to say, ‘Here we rest!’” The times are indeed rude and troublous again in Alabama, and Jason Isbell’s inspired album offers both documentation and the same fervent hope that his people will find their rest.

Jessica Lea Mayfield

Mayfield, who was born in Ohio and partly raised in Tennessee, has been performing since she was eight years old with her family’ s bluegrass band, One Way Rider, and she was home-schooled along the way. As she dryly puts it now, “ My parents made a point not to let school get in the way of my education.” They traveled in a 1956 tour bus previously used by Ernest Tubb, Bill Monroe, and Kitty Wells. For a time, Mayfield adopted the stage name Chittlin. The experience wasas formative as it was unconventional: “ It contributed to the way I am now, having to be somewhere different all the time, every day. I was always being somewhere else; my sense of home and comfort was constantly being on the go. My songwriting, the manner in which I write my songs, was really inspired by playing bluegrass music and playing bluegrass festivals.

Kovacs & The Polar Bear

Kovacs & The Polar Bear is a conglomeration of disparate influences, of old and new. At base, they’re playing folk music—an acoustic guitar and tales of love, of life, and of living. This is the old-fashioned foundation, and built around it is a modern sound constructed of electric guitar, bass, and the occasional cropping up of synths. All of which are tied together by catchy hooks and vocal harmonies. While all this is going on, they never treat rock ‘n’ roll like a taboo, never afraid of adding a little punch (especially live) to their songs, meaning you get a little something to tap your foot along to in the bargain.

“ Forget being signed. Paper fades. Legends don’t. I was born one.” This is what this band lives by. They started out as street musicians, filling downtown Asheville streets corners while touching many hearts . “The streets is where we love to be. With a sound and style that is so unique, they’re sure to please any crowd. Playing covers such as “Fast Car and Give me One Reason,” by Tracy Chapman, to their compelling version of Tear the Roof Off/ We Want the Funk,” by George Clinton, it would be hard not to get in the groove with them. Marc Broussard

Marc Broussard is an artist with a unique gift of channeling the spirits of classic R&B, rock and soul into contemporary terms. This gift has been a matter of common knowledge since 2002, when Broussard released his debut album, Momentary Setback, which he recorded and released independently at age 20. Pretty much throughout his life, Broussard has been tapped as a talent to watch. Up to this point, the road has been longer than one would expect from an artist as young as Broussard. Already he has toured with giants - Maroon 5, Dave Matthews Band, Willie Nelson, Chris Isaak and Bonnie Raitt, among others. And he's hooked up with some outstanding duet partners, including two noteworthy female artists: LeAnn Rimes and Sara Bareilles (who opened several tours for Broussard before her career skyrocketed).

Sanctum Sully

Traditionally Untraditional...or maybe it's untraditionally traditional. Bluegrass bands struggle daily with this handle that has been used to describe their music and their style - especially bands claiming Asheville, North Carolina as home base. Sanctum Sully thankfully deviates mightily from said agenda. While fully capable of wrangling a helluva version of "John Hardy" they'd much prefer to punch you in the gut with potent and powerfully written original songs! Three part harmonies, blues based guitar riffs, and ringer of a mandolin, and you've got yourself a 'Sully' show. Foot stompin’ good times and grassed up versions of blues, rock, and jamband tunes could sneak their way between a unique array of originals in their somewhat unpredictable sets.

The Whigs

With their stunning third album, IN THE DARK, the Whigs have gone widescreen. Bursting with energy, emotion, and unpredictable experimentation, the Athens, GA-based trio tear open the artistic envelope, bringing both nuance and eclectic strength to songs like “Hundred / Million” and the raucous first single, “Kill Me Carolyne.” IN THE DARK is both atmospheric and ambitious, without losing the pedal-to-the-metal power that earned them universal praise as one of merica’s finest young rock ‘n’ roll bands. Much of the album’s amplified creative direction can be attributed to the involvement of bassist Tim Deaux, who joined founding members Parker Gispert (guitar/vocals) and Julian Dorio (drums) just prior to the 2008 release of the Whigs’ acclaimed second album, MISSION CONTROL.
